Leaders in the Global North need to make room for the Global south to create sustainable societies by doing so themselves. The responsibility of climate change is often shifted to China and India, even though Australia, Canada and USA – along with many European countries – have the highest emissions per capita in the world. If they can set an example by reducing per capita emissions, this would reflect the truly collective action that the world needs. And this can be done by making Education for Sustainable Development a core tenet of the curriculum from schools to universities and colleges. Students all around the world will be encouraged to think globally and act locally. A vital part of building a livable future for all is to ensure that access to formal education is offered to everyone, everywhere. It would also allow workers in the oil and gas industry to get reskilled!
